BRIEF NOTES

Belgian Cinema
Edited by Marianne Thys
Ludion : Ghent : 1999
ISBN 9-0554-4234-8 : 992 pages : hardcover : $69.50

From the moment I first held this book I knew I wanted it. Its exhaustive listing of Belgian films, from 1896 through 1996, made it the definitive film catalog and Belgian cinema overview from the moment it was published. The text is presented in French, Dutch and English, and the book is amply illustrated with photographs, frame enlargements and promotional materials. Of its nearly 1000 pages, 227 pages cover the Belgian silent era. Films and filmmakers of note are described in lengthy paragraphs, including films made by Alfred Machin, Jacques de Baroncelli, Paul Flon, Francis Martin, Raquel Meller and Suzanne Christy, and a Belgian Zorro film.

While reading this book will hardly turn one into an expert on the subject, Belgian Cinema will give the reader an excellent overview of Belgian silent era films and beyond. We recommend this book to serious enthusiasts and historians.
