My freshman publishing effort was this science fiction book review magazine. The concept of self-publishing a magazine was foreign to me until I was exposed to a small handful of science fiction and comics fanzines by friends. Also foreign to me were the basics of publishing, spelling and print production. What the hell . . . I was 19 years old. I wrote most of the reviews under several silly pseudonyms with the misguided thought that several names would impress my readers. What I didn’t know was that no one would give a damn what I had to say about science fiction books. Each copy of the magazine was individually numbered “12/250” in pencil so that everyone would assume that they had the twelfth copy in a print run of 250. |
