Silent Film in Kansas City, Missouri

The Kansas City Public Library presents a series of silent films the way the filmmakers intended: with live musical performances accompanying each frame. Local composer Jeffrey Ruckma leads the Spoonbender Consort, playing his own unique scores with eclectic instrumentation arranged for seldom seen documentary and dramatic films from the Silent Era. The scores for this program range from sets for piano with winds and strings to a careening jazz quartet, in addition to folk instrumentation and an eclectic arrangement featuring cello-accompanied dulcimers, toy pianos, oboe, and bells.
