Married screenwriter Gene Markey at the Town House apartment hotel in Hollywood, California, USA, 12 March 1932; daughter Melinda Markey (born 27 February 1934); divorced. Married producer Walter Wanger; daughter Shelley Wanger.

Joan Bennett’s first stage appearance was in the stage production of Damaged Goods, starring her father Richard Bennett, at Chicago in 1914.
