Scenic Temple Theatre was originally built in 1829 as the Westminster Congregational Unitarian Church, but was converted to a theater in 1902. The Scenic Temple was the second theater in Providence to regularly exhibit motion pictures.

By 1916, the theater’s name had been changed to the Rialto Theatre. James C. Thornton resigned as theater manager in 1928.
