Wings
(1927)

This first Academy Award-winner for Best Picture features Charles ‘Buddy’ Rogers, Richard Arlen, Clara Bow and a youthful Gary Cooper in a tale of two young aviators fighting the European war during World War I.

2000? unknown Hong Kong? edition

Wings (1927), black & white, 129 minutes, not rated.

Unknown company, unknown catalog number, unknown UPC number.
Full-frame 4:3 NTSC, one single-sided, single-layered DVD disc, Region 0, mono? sound, English language intertitles, unknown language (likely Cantonese, Mandarin) subtitles, chapter stops?, keep case?, unknown suggested list price.
DVD release date: 2000?
Country of origin: Hong Kong?

This unknown DVD edition of Wings popped up for sale on eBay and other Internet auction sites in 2000. Be aware that often these discs are usually directly mastered from inferior video sources like laserdisc or VHS videotape and are manufactured under less than ideal conditions. These discs are cheaply manufactured to turn a quick and sometimes illegal buck, and the manufacturers often show little care for the quality of the final product.

If the DVD was mastered from the laserdisc or videotape editions of Paramount’s home video release from more than ten years ago, then the Gaylord Carter organ score of that release will likely accompany this disc.

2004? BoYing edition

Wings (1927), black & white, 138 minutes, not rated.

BoYing, BD108, no UPC number.
Full-frame 4:3 NTSC, one single-sided, single-layered? DVD disc, Region 0, Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound (processed from stereo source), English language intertitles, Chinese language subtitles, 12 chapter stops, keep case, unknown suggested list price.
DVD release date: 2004?
Country of origin: Hong Kong?

Our first look at this newer Chinese edition, which is available from sellers on eBay, reveals an OK-looking disc (mastered from a substandard source) that features the same Gaylord Carter pipe organ music score that was available on Paramount Home Video editions of the film on laserdisc and VHS videotape. The edition has nonremoveable Chinese subtitles.
