The girl goes away and works to raise her son, the child of Harford. Through some unexplained manner she gains an entrance into society and her son becomes a barrister. Through the influence of a friend, Mrs. Arbuthnot, as she now calls herself, secures a coveted position for her son. She is shocked when she learns that the man to whom he is to act as secretary is Harford, now Lord Illingworth.
